According to Islamic belief, the stone came from Jannah (Paradise) and was originally whiter than milk.
Over time, the sins of people who touched or kissed it caused it to darken.
Muslims do not worship the stone—it is kissed or touched out of respect and Sunnah, as Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did.
A radical group called the Qarmatians stole the stone and took it to Bahrain. It was returned after 22 years, but damaged.
The stone is placed about 1.5 meters (5 feet) above the ground at the eastern corner of the Kaaba.
The silver frame around it has been replaced or repaired multiple times due to wear and damage.
Millions of Muslims have started their circumambulation (Tawaf) by pointing to or touching the stone for over 1,400 years.
